Turn Off Your Idol
Washer, Wilkerson

[You won't go to hell because you have a television.  You won't go to heaven because you don't.  It's a matter of your intimacy with God] - Leonard Ravenhill

As the quote well states, this video is not about legalism, outward piety, how much time can be spent on trivial amusements,or whether its ok to own a television.  There are two simple life and death issues that every professing Christian need examine regarding the use of TV.  The first is to look at what programs you watch (this also applies to internet, music, etc).  I find it strange that someone who is genuinely born again and loves Christ can enjoy watching the very things Christ died for and to set us free from.  Blasphemy, sexual immorality, hatred, violence, greed, the pride of life, etc. are all the typical content of sitcoms (even most "clean" ones), daytime talk shows, primetime television, and professional sports.  Does the Holy Spirit laugh at the blasphemous jokes of Homer Simpson, snicker at the sexual innuendos on The Office, soak in the pride of life on American Idol, or join the wild shouts of the crowd when a fight breaks out during an NHL game?  Do you not know that you are the temple of the Holy Spirit, if indeed He lives in you?

The second issue is time. How we spend our free time reveals what is in our heart, just as the words of our mouth do. Spending a lot of time being entertained by worldly amusements, even lawful television that does not defy the word of God or our conscience, surely displays a void of the love of God in the heart.  I would urge anyone who is addicted to TV or compromises with filthy programs, yet claims to have genuine affections in their heart towards Jesus Christ, to examine the scriptures below.  Do not harden your heart or otherwise take this matter lightly, less the thorns of life completely choke the word of God out of you.  Allow the Lord to prove your affections for Him are true by setting you free from your sin and drawing you into a deeper walk with Him.  Some may even need to go so far as to cut off your right hand of sin and throw the TV away.  I pray this message works conviction for the sanctification of the true believer and causes great alarm in the falsely converted professor.

You can download the audio version as an mp3 file by clicking here  (right click and save-as).  Be sure to share it with every professing Christian that you know.

I would also direct anyone who is particularly alarmed by this video to read Hypocrites Deficient In The Duty Of Prayer by the eighteenth century preacher Jonathon Edwards.  This brilliant sermon, preached during the last great awakening, strikes directly at the heart of this matter with clarity and Holy Spirit conviction.  If you know something is wrong with your Christian walk, I can't recommend it enough.  (I do not specifically endorse the website this sermon was found on as I do not know much about it)
